What’s with recent deadly barn fires? Well over 50 race horses have died in two separate raging infernos in recent weeks while today some 500 milking goats and 20 cows succumbed to a terrible blaze in the London area. Barns with smoke detectors, alarm systems and good water supplies are a must these days when it comes to commercial rural life. Structure damage is always terrible…buildings can be restored, dead livestock is another question as one imagines their last few minutes here on earth.
Having lived on a farm in the Burgessville area south of Woodstock, off and on during WW2, one can tell you farmers are generous, selfless, honourable people. So any barn fire is terrible. Farm folk will pull together, will shed a few quiet tears, then roll up their sleeves and get back to the land. But for today please allow us to weep quietly with them.
