Before Easy Street officially was named back in early 1960 by Midland councillors (who were paid $8 per meeting), it was a Sandy Lane. The lane was perfect for horses pulling wagons full of heavy coal, ice, lumber and other large loads, otherwise it was a struggle tackling Hugel Avenue hill to Fourth Street and beyond. It was longer to travel on Yonge Street West to Seventh over to Hugel and back down to Fourth to meet needs in that area.
Now, back to Easy Street, Charlie Chaplin appeared in a movie called Easy Street back in the late 1900’s.
In Broadway/movie hit Annie they sang about Easy Street. As for naming Easy Street at a council meeting, it took let less than three minutes…..wow wasn’t that neat? If you are interested, ask me the origins of streets called Simcoe, Penetang, Midland or Washington…
