One read a letter by someone shilling for OPP being contracted to provide policing in Midland. The author felt that since local policing costs takes up more than half of the town budget….it is time to go OPP and save tax dollars.
Just for the record, local policing eats up slightly over a quarter of the budget! Our police force is well-trained, professional, economical and the members believe in community first – in fact it is their motto.
Public works by the way consumes more tax dollars and why not? By the way we’ve heard of no complaints about this equally hard-working department. And why should we! Police are the hot top and easy target to distract from the real problems in our community – who, ironically, we call upon the police to deal with.
How about mounting education costs not to mention welfare. So when it comes to shilling for a change of police forces it is important that the facts are real not a figment of one’s imagination. One also hopes the letter writer will remember the following: if Midland eventually goes OPP and down the road HQ insists on Midland building a new detachment office with all of its bells and whistles.
By the way this was the case in Parry Sound, Collingwood and Orillia when they went OPP after their councils wanted to score huge savings.
Don’t hold your breath if you think there is going to be huge savings if Midland should go OPP and don’t be surprised should the town make that decision, if fewer police patrol our streets at night following a change of guard.
