Simcoe North MP Bruce Stanton was in North Bay last Friday, as part of the Annual General Assembly of Ontario’s Métis. Numbering more than 17,000 in Ontario; the largest area falling within the Georgian Bay Métis Council. According to Stanton, the Métis Nation of Ontario is progressive, resourceful advocate for their community – on advancing economic and employment advantage for their citizens; fighting against discrimination and violence against aboriginal women; protecting their rights as Aboriginal people in Canada including hunting and fishing rights in traditional territories, and helping along the path toward reconciliation of past grievances and resentments between themselves and First Nations peoples; between non-Aboriginals and Aboriginals people.
The Simcoe North MP agreed, “They’re an impressive lot and a force for a more inclusive and respectful society”. The Assembly had about 400 in attendance at this important weekend information sharing event.
As MP for Simcoe North, Stanton is also Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons and has had a dedicated career representing his riding as well as serving in the House sitting in the Speaker’s Chair.
