Elmvale native, the late Jack Lawson was born to skate, but on stilts. Growing up in Elmvale he often cleared snow off a section of frozen Wye River near his west end Family home and would skate from morning until night. Later married Jack moved to Woodstock to set up his barber shop.
It was said, Lawson’s had the biggest and best outdoor rink in the city, always mirror like and well flooded. It didn’t take Jack long before he joined the local figure skating club….it was there when he got the bug to skate on stilts. He could do what Sanja Heni and Barbara Ann Scott could perform on their picked toed skates but on stilts, high above the ice service. He was still skating into his late 80’s. He was promoted to glory in his early 90’s. Elmvale’s native son’s sister became an endearing teacher in the maple syrup celebrating community.
Can you imagine being a Bobby Orr or a Brian Orser and skating on stilts? We can’t!
