In North Simcoe, the biggest barrier to ending homelessness is a lack of affordable housing.
“We have all of these housing workers who are supporting homeless people and their role is to help get them housed, but we can’t find the housing,” said Sonia Ladouceur. “People are homeless because we don’t have enough housing stock.”
Ladouceur is the executive director at Shelter Now, a Midland organization offering transitional housing and support services to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Shelter Now’s mission is to help transition homeless people from one of their 20 transitional housing units to independent living. This task is becoming increasingly difficult.
