An arbitrator ruling handed down on Dec. 20 creates a new collective agreement for 12,000 college faculty who went on strike earlier in the year.
The award comes a month after the five-week strike affecting all of Ontario’s colleges came to a legislated end.
Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) highlighted the award’s inclusion of contract language around academic freedom that will allow faculty to speak freely about academic issues without fear of reprisal.
“The issue had been a major sticking point in the talks both before and during the strike that ended Nov. 19 when the province legislated faculty back to work,” OPSEU said in a press release.
