Eric Conroy, the SS Keewatin’s Captain Rick, was awarded a Senate 150th Anniversary medal during a special ceremony in Ottawa on Nov. 28.

A total of 350 people across the country received a medal, as the Senate celebrates honoured Canadians whose generosity, dedication and volunteerism impacted many.

Conroy has brought joy to children across Canada. For nearly 40 years he has been a volunteer of Toronto’s Santa Claus Parade and he also established Toys for the North with the RCMP, which distributes 50,000 toys each year to kids in the north. He also worked to repatriate the Keewatin, which now draws 10,000 visitors a year to Port McNicoll.
