Shared: Here’s why your garbage is still on the curb in Simcoe County

Ten seconds doesn’t seem like a lot, but for Simcoe County waste collectors it adds up.

One truck can collect as much as 10 tons of waste on a daily route of about 900 homes.

“When you add just 10 seconds per household for the extra requirements of dealing with snow, that’s an extra 2.5 hours to every route,” Rob McCullough, director of solid waste said.

The extra time has meant some homes have missed one or two garbage collections.

McCullough said every year the county misses some garbage collection due to weather, but the last few weeks have presented unique challenges.

“Even when it’s not snowing, it’s blowing and causing problems for us,” McCullough said. “The extreme cold not only affects…
