The Gilbert Centre is marking National HIV/AIDS Awareness Week with the third annual Red Scarf Project in Simcoe County.
In Simcoe County, the health unit reports between seven and 14 new cases each year.
While the numbers may not seem very high, Croteau said in a country with available preventive measures and awareness campaigns in school, it’s higher than necessary.
The spread of the disease, Croteau said, can be attributed to the fact that one in four people who are HIV positive are unaware.
“You could have HIV, in some cases, upwards of 10 years before you have any reason to believe something is wrong,” Croteau said.
