Officers with the Southern Georgian Bay OPP marine patrol unit helped rescue a man on July 7 after his sailboat caught fire.

The OPP, with assistance from the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre, Anishinabek police marine unit and Tiny Township Fire Department responded to a distress call just before 7:30 p.m. on Saturday night.

The rescue team located and assisted a man on a 26-foot sailboat which had caught fire while sailing between Beckwith Island and Thunder Beach. While the man escaped with no injuries, the sailboat was destroyed by the blaze.

OPP marine unit lays 12 charges

Officers with the Southern Georgian Bay OPP marine patrol unit checked 54 vessels during 38 hours of patrol from July 4 to 8, laying 12 charges.
