A mammoth legal bill has caught the Midland Police Services Board off-guard.
In December, the board was notified of a series of invoices totalling more than $332,000 for legal services from Johnstone & Cowling LLP related to an ongoing Police Services Act prosecution.
“The board was surprised,” said Stewart Strathearn, town councillor and board vice-chair. “There’s this whopping legal bill … four times the budget allocated for the year.”
The board is responsible for the setting and managing the Midland Police Service budget. For 2017, $80,000 had been allocated for legal fees. As of Nov. 30, they were well within their budget having spent just under $30,000.
