Shared: Midland taxpayers could see some of the projected police savings this year

A portion of the projected $9.1 million in savings the Town of Midland expects as a result of the transition from the Midland Police Service to the Ontario Provincial Police could be directed into this year’s budget.

Staff have recommended the town allocate $4.5 million of the projected future savings toward an upfront benefit of taxpayers. This money would be split up in declining increments over the course of 10 years with the 2018 budget receiving $800,000 and the 2019 budget getting $700,000.

The town would draw on reserves for first few years on the basis of these anticipated future savings in order to see some of the intended costs savings from the transition immediately.
