Plans for an affordable housing complex at 161 Church St. were quashed by Penetanguishene council at an April 25 meeting due to a clerical error, public opposition and an old council promise.

In 2016, the town submitted a list of 11 properties to the County of Simcoe for consideration for an affordable housing development. A property at 161 Church — incorrectly identified as 159 Church St. in the town’s proposal — was accepted for preliminary design and costing.

In early 2018, it was discovered the land had been incorrectly identified as being zoned residential multiple density instead of open space. In order for the county’s proposed four-storey, 50-unit building to move, forward the 2.42-hectare space needed to be rezoned.
