Royal Canadian Legion Branch 68 in Penetanguishene has finally climbed out of the massive hole the organization found itself in after a past president and secretary-treasurer robbed it of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On April 26, 2002, the legion took out a $550,000 mortgage on the building located at 2 Poyntz St. On May 11, 2018, the last mortgage payment was made – 16 years and one month later.

“A lot of people didn’t think we could do it,” said president David Sampson. “But we didn’t miss one mortgage payment.”

Members of the legion celebrated the final payment with a mortgage burning ceremony. Branch 68 now officially owns the building.
