Shared: Simcoe County District School Board investing in elementary music programs

The Simcoe County District School Board will be spending $500,000 over three years to provide all elementary students with music instruction.

Beginning with one-third of elementary schools in 2018, the SCDSB will be committing to a teaching model where students will learn from designated music teachers.

“Not only is music pleasurable to listen to, but it also helps us make cognitive connections,” said Eileen Carl, a former principal at W.R. Best Elementary School, who was tasked with investigating a music delivery model. “According to McMaster University’s Institute for music in the mind, children who take music lessons or are exposed to music education in schools show greater brain development and improved memory over those children who do not.”
