Shared: Simcoe County school boards consider area-specific development charges

Trustees from Simcoe County’s public and separate school boards recently got a look at what an area-specific bylaw for education development charges may look like.

The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) met on Sept. 10 to hear updates about the education development charges (EDCs) bylaw, which is used to collect funds from new developments to purchase land for new school sites.

The current EDC bylaw has been in place since 2013 and the boards are reviewing them because they expire in November.

A previous report form the boards’ consultant had only considered a jurisdiction-wide rate for the EDCs, which would’ve seen the charges increase from $1,759 per residential unit to $5,050…
