In response to feedback from developers and municipalities, Simcoe County’s school boards will consider area-specific rates for collecting education development charges.

The Simcoe County District School Board and Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board are taking a second look at their bylaw for education development charges (EDCs), which are used to purchase land for new school sites.

The boards proposed a jurisdiction wide-charge at a May 1 meeting that would see the charges increase from $1,759 per residential unit to $5,064 per unit.

Non-residential developments would also see an increase in EDCs from 47 cents per square foot of gross floor area to $1.37.
