April showers bring May flowers, but water conservation techniques like installing a rain barrel at a downspout could provide water throughout the spring and summer months.

An added benefit of installing a rain barrel, said Pomerantz, is chlorine- and fluoride-free water for gardeners.

“Any avid gardener will tell you that rain water allows plants to grow a lot bigger and better than tap water typically does,” Pomerantz said.

Pomerantz said his company, RainBarrel.ca recovers used food-grade barrels from food and beverage processing plants and converts them into rain barrels.

The 220-liter barrels are distributed mainly through sales through nonprofit organizations.
