Buck passing and denial with respect to issues at our library

At this week’s council meeting, I witnessed excuses. buck passing and denial with respect to issues at our library. I take my hat off to the dedicated and courageous library staff who seem to be the ones taking a hit, when it is their efforts that are filling the void and keeping the public informed about potentially dangerous occurrences taking place in this public facility. What I witnessed on tv was not particularly healthy for our community and the steps being proposed to deal with the issues that came out at last evenings meeting were not satisfactory.

Council, the police board and library board can do better and playing the blame game and pointing a finger at library staff is not the answer. Get back to police foot patrols and listening to staff when issues arise would be a good start. This might eliminate the need for security cost at the venue referred to earlier. Our citizens and particularly our children deserve better attention to this issue. There is an immediate need for affirmative action not more meetings. This is not a situation that is recent but from what I see has been percolating for some time.

  1. The library situation is concerning. A few years ago, there was an outreach program that as I recall worked well for the homeless and those suffering from addictions. They asked council for financial assistance and as I recall, Mayor McKay and council were not interested. The program closed down for lack of funds. It is apparent that we need a program such as this and perhaps also a safe injection site. The library is very important and it should not become a fortress. We need to provide alternatives for our homeless to gather safely.
