While I am a supporter of all our municipal services, especially our emergency services who seem to be an easy target these days (for a variety of reasons both valid and invalid), the costs of maintaining these services cannot be argued away. It seems that either with local or outsourced emergency services, their costs can easily be found to become unsustainable and something has to be done.
This report seems right on the money (pun intended) and calls on our political leaders to set an example and for arbitration systems to be revamped to balance the needs of these professions with those who fund them. I don’t know if that’s coming any time soon but with the OPP contract talks stalled or heading to arbitration the Province has the ability to set the bar at at sustainable height and for others to follow their lead.
From all we’ve learned about policing over the past few years, the OPP contract is THE gold standard for wage increases everywhere else in the Province. Let’s see what happens shall we? Especially as the town considers partnering with the Province for policing this month.
